Is the Summer Heat Damaging Your Roof?
Here’s What Every Homeowner Should Know!
When homeowners think about roof damage, they usually think of hail, heavy rain, or strong winds. But one of the biggest threats to your roof can be something much quieter: Extreme heat.
On a hot summer day, roof temperatures can exceed 150°F. Without proper attic ventilation, attic temperatures can climb as high as 160°F, hot enough to damage not only your shingles but also the roof decking and rafters. (It’s almost hot enough to roast a chicken, too!)
As your roof heats up during the day and cools at night, the constant expansion and contraction of roofing materials accelerates aging and can significantly shorten the life of your roof.
Common Signs of Heat Damage
Keep an eye out for these warning signs:
• Blistering shingles
• Granule loss (lots of pebbles in your gutters or downspouts)
• Nail pops
• Delamination (shingle layers separating)
• Zippering (vertical cracks running up the roof)
• Pitting (small pits or indentations on shingles)
• An attic that’s much hotter than the outside temperature

A tip from the pros: If you can see shiny shingles from the street or notice excessive granules in your gutters, and your roof isn’t even 20 years old, there’s a good chance excessive heat and poor ventilation are accelerating its aging.
Why Proper Ventilation Matters
Many people think insulation is what protects the roof, but that’s only half the story.
Insulation keeps your home comfortable, while attic ventilation keeps your roof cool. A healthy attic should only be about 5–10°F warmer than the outside temperature.
When an attic isn’t ventilated properly, it doesn’t just damage the roof.
It can also:
Increase your air conditioning costs. Trap humid, moisture-laden air that can contribute to organic growth such as mold and mildew. Reduce the lifespan of your roof by years, even decades.
Can It Be Fixed?
Many older homes rely on soffit vents to bring cool air into the attic. Unfortunately, if the soffits aren’t vented properly, improving ventilation often requires both a roofing and siding project.
At All-Side Roofing & Restoration, we can often install modern shingle-over intake ventilation systems that improve attic airflow while replacing the roof, helping protect your home without requiring a separate siding project in many cases.
Protect Your Investment
A quality roof is designed to last 25–35+ years, but excessive heat and poor attic ventilation can dramatically reduce that lifespan. The good news is that many heat-related issues can be prevented with proper ventilation and routine roof inspections.
Many of the early warning signs of heat damage aren’t visible from the ground. Even if your roof looks fine from your driveway, hidden issues could already be developing beneath the shingles or inside your attic.
That’s why it’s important to have your roof evaluated by a qualified professional.
If you have concerns about your roof or attic ventilation, we’re here to help. Our team offers complimentary roof inspections to identify heat damage, ventilation issues, and other concerns before they turn into costly repairs.
