After a summer of heat, storms, wind, and rain, fall is a great time to make sure your roof is ready for the colder months ahead. A little preparation now can help identify concerns before winter weather makes inspections and exterior work more difficult.
Clean Your Gutters & Check Downspouts
Gutters collect leaves, twigs, dirt, and other debris throughout the year. Cleaning them before heavy leaf season can help you find clogs before they lead to overflowing gutters or drainage problems.
Check your downspouts, too. Water should be directed away from your home, not emptied right next to the foundation.
If you have several trees around your property, plan to check and clean your gutters more than once throughout fall.
Inspect Your Roof
Summer storms and wind may leave behind missing, lifted, cracked, or damaged shingles, flashing problems, or excessive granule loss.
But remember: not all roof damage can be identified from the ground. If you suspect damage, contact a trusted roofing company for a professional inspection rather than climbing onto the roof yourself.
Fall is an ideal time to do this before snow, ice, and cold temperatures make inspections and repairs more difficult.
Check Your Attic & Ventilation
Your attic can reveal problems you may not see outside. Look for water stains, damp areas, discoloration, or other signs of moisture.
Pay attention to temperature, too. As a general rule of thumb, an attic may be around 10–15°F warmer than outside under comparable conditions. If it’s consistently much hotter, your ventilation may need to be evaluated.
Proper ventilation helps manage heat and moisture, both important as winter approaches.
Check Nearby Trees
Look for dead, damaged, or overhanging branches that could affect your roof during strong winds, snow, or ice. Nearby trees can also mean more leaves in your gutters, so plan accordingly.
Plan Ahead
Set a schedule for routine gutter cleaning and create a timeline for any roofing concerns you identify.
Don’t wait for winter to discover a problem.
Clean your gutters. Check your downspouts. Inspect your roof and attic. And make a plan for anything that needs attention.
